The Complete Guide to Building Creative Confidence Through Fun Crafting

Understanding Creative Confidence: What It Is and Why It Matters

Hi I’m Angie, the Purple Craft Diva and creativity is my JAM. I’m passionate about helping you build your creative confidence because I believe it’s SOOOO important and beneficial to your life and society.

At its core, creative confidence means you are self-assured that you can think outside the box and create innovative ideas and solutions.

It is DEFINITELY possible to get there!

Creativity is not just a buzzword. It’s not just an asset for a select group of people, it’s a necessity. Moreover, boosting self-esteem through creativity can have profound effects on our overall well-being. As we nurture our creative confidence, we not only enhance our skills but we also build resilience and innovation in every area of our life.

The Connection Between Crafting and Developing Creative Confidence

crafting builds confidence

Crafting plays a significant role in fostering creativity, offering hands-on opportunities for creative expression.

Sometimes you need to put your adult hat on the shelf and play and create like a child. Kids don’t have the same inhibitions adults carry. They are free to be themselves. Participating in art and craft activities enhances artistic skills but also builds creative confidence by allowing individuals to experiment without the fear of failure.

If you have ever seen me on Instagram or Tiktok, you know I say regularly that, “Perfection is not the goal in crafting.”

I know that’s hard to hear, but it’s the truth. Sometimes your art will be amazing and sometimes it will go straight in the trash. Either way, you did it and grew your creative confidence along the way.

The process of creating something from scratch encourages exploration of imagination, enabling individuals to push boundaries and discover new ways to express themselves.

Ultimately, the connection between crafting and developing creative confidence highlights how artistic activities can serve as a foundation for broader personal growth and empowerment.

How Different Crafts Can Enhance Your Creative Skills

Engaging in various crafts can significantly enhance your creative skills and boost your confidence.

Let’s look at a few examples and their benefits. Hopefully this will help you choose a new project for yourself to try.

One popular craft is knitting. Knitting is not just for grandmas anymore. Learning to knit fosters creativity and promotes mental clarity. As you learn to create intricate patterns, you develop problem-solving skills and patience, both of which are essential for creative thinking.

Painting is another powerful medium for self-discovery. It encourages individuals to express their emotions visually. You can free form paint or use a template or kit. Either way, you are training your mind to process color combinations and sequence. Through the process of mixing colors and experimenting with techniques, you can unlock new ideas and perspectives that contribute to your overall creative journey.

Listen, paint parties are so popular for a reason. For example, it allows people of all skill levels to participate. It promotes unity and collaborative fun and it encourages self expression in a guided format.

Additionally, engaging in DIY projects…MY FAVORITE! It provides a tangible way to express yourself while honing practical skills. Whether it’s creating home decor or crafting personalized gifts, these projects allow you to explore your artistic side and building confidence.

Practical Tips for Developing Confidence Through Crafting

  1. Set Crafting Goals: Begin by establishing clear and achievable goals for your crafting projects. That means no more just thinking about it, or researching. Pick a craft, set a deadline to get started and get to having fun. LOL
  2. Find Inspiration in Everyday Life: Look around you for inspiration—nature, architecture, or even everyday objects can spark creativity. Keeping a journal or mood board to collect images and ideas can help you tap into your surroundings when seeking inspiration. I like to take pictures and organize them in my phone by creating a folder called “inspiration.” Sometimes it makes me smile just scrolling through that folder.
  3. Practice Regularly: Consistent practice is key to building confidence in any skill, including crafting. Set aside dedicated time each week to do something crafty or creative. It doesn’t have to be big or perfect. The goal here is to get in the habit of tapping into your creativity.
  4. Join a Community: Connecting with other crafters can provide support and encouragement as you develop your skills. Hey, I’m your crafty BFF now and I’m here to help you. Make sure to join my craft tribe below. It’s a growing group of people at all skill levels that just wanna have fun creating. You can also join Facebook groups that focus on crafts that you like.

There’s just so many great benefits!

How I Built My DIY Creative Confidence

So, I’ve always considered myself creative. I enjoy thinking out the box, creating things, etc. Like I said earlier, Creativity is my Jam.

As a result, you might think I’d be good at all hands on projects right? NO.

When I bought my first house it was a fixer upper (I mean like rip everything out to the studs). While I had excitement to tackle some DIY projects, I was super nervous because I had little knowledge of power tools and construction techniques.

Well, I’m so thankful God gave me a super handy father. He was our in-house “Bob the Builder.” Well his name was Ervin and he had an engineering degree, so maybe he’s “Erv the Engineer.” Whatever you call him, he could fix anything.

Thank God for Handy Dads

My grandfather was a general contractor so my Dad grew up painting houses and installing floors during the summer. Though he had a corporate career and wore suits everyday, my Dad could of easily been a contractor himself. He had the SKILLS! Peep him out working in his slacks and collared shirt. LOL That’s my Dad!

Naturally, I had my Dad help me with my projects. He showed me how to rip up my nasty pet pee stained carpets. Then painted every single wall in the house…literally EVERY wall.

Dad, taught me how to use the miter saw to cut wood and for Christmas that year, my Dad bought me a drill.

I was sooo excited.

There were times that my Dad could’ve done a project by himself faster, but he made it a point to make me do every step with him so I learned.

Use each creative experience to build skills

Though we were working to rehab my new home, these experiences were so much more than just projects. I learned valuable construction skills that I could carry on to many projects in the future.

Not only that, it proved to me that I can actually do it myself. Completing these projects built my confidence. Now I’m a sawing, drilling, building Diva that you would never have known that there was a day I barely knew how to use a hammer.

My father passed in 2020 and my Mom wanted us all to have some things of my Dad’s. I immediately said, “The tools are mine.” Now I have a garage of almost every tool and machine you can think of, and when I use them I think to myself, ” Dad, you taught me well.”

If you don’t have a Dad or Grandfather or uncle that can teach you, find a community that will help you grow. There is power in collaboration.

  • Watch how-to videos on Youtube
  • If you see someone in your neighborhood doing something you like, ask them can you come shadow them and help.
