How to make a DIY Tiara for less than $10

Every girl needs a Tiara!  But when you are a Craft Diva, your tiara is probably a DIY from non-traditional materials.

Sounds even more fun right?

This tutorial will walk you step by step on how to make a Tiara with bling from some pipe cleaners, glue, and rhinestones…and less than $10.

Why DIY Tiaras?

You may ask, “why do I need to make a tiara?”

Well, first, it’s a fun quick craft that you can do with women and girls of all ages.

Second, it’s a fun, yet cheap craft you can do.

Lastly, because you need one.

If you’ve read any of my blogs you know that I talk a lot about loving yourself and letting your inner DIVA shine (I mean my name is Purple Craft Diva).  Check out my blog called “3 reason you should be a Diva everyday.”  Society tries to tell us that being a “DIVA” is a negative thing, but I’m on a campaign to reclaim our title.  A Diva is just a confident women that knows her worth and I believe every Diva deserves a crown.

Let’s make Tiara magic:

I’m going to walk you through how to make a tiara.  This project was made with cute, shiny pipe cleaners and I love her.

Materials

  • 1 Package of Silver Pipe Cleaners
  • 3-5 Glue Sticks
  • 10-20 Rhinestones

Tools

  • Glue Gun
  • Wire cutters or Scissors

Instructions

  1. First you make the base of the tiara. This is the part that sits on your head. Take about a pipe cleaner and curve it until you've made a half circle the size of your head. Measure it and make sure it fits where you want it to sit on your head.
  2. We'll add the tiara detail in three levels. Level one creates a base design that every other level will build upon. Take 2 pipe cleaners and cut them in half with your wire cutters or scissors. Then fold (not cute) those pieces in half again. Start by twisting the one of these piece in the middle of your half circle. Next, make two U shapes and secure the ends of the pipe cleaner to the bottom to hold the shape. DIY Tiara, Step 2
  3. Place another half pipe cleaner piece in the middle of a loop and twist in half. Continue to add these pieces and creating u shapes until you have overlapping loops on the whole half circle.
  4. Time to make level two. Fold a full pipe cleaner in half. Twist down about an 1/2 inch from the fold creating an oval shape. Then smooth out the ends with your fingers to round them a bit. You're going to position this piece so the "half moon" shape is in the center. Twist the ends to the base. Repeat this step two more times to create three identical hoops on level 2. DIY Tiara, Step 4
  5. For Level three, there is just one final design loop. It's the same process as step 4, but come down about 3/4 inch from the fold to make the "half moon" shape a little larger. Position this final loop in the center and secure it to the top of the level one loops. DIY Tiara, step 5
  6. Round out the base again so it's a nice half circle. Take a second pipe cleaner and attach both ends to the ends of your tiara. This creates the full crown look. (you could also glue mini combs on the ends instead of making a full circle crown).
  7. Bling time! Hot glue your rhinestones all over your tiara. Use as much or as little as you like. Voila, just like that, you have a Blingy Tiara. DIY Tiara, final step

Notes

You can find silver pipe cleaners at the Dollar Tree during holiday season or at any hobby store year round. I bought jewels at Hobby Lobby in the jewelry aisle. The pipe cleaners and rhinestones come in a variety of colors so you can make this tiara any color you choose.

I just love this DIY Tiara and I had tons of fun making it.  I hope you do too.  Drop a picture of your tiara in the comments section or tell me about your favorite part.  I’d love to see your creations.

Until Next Time…Stay Crafty!
