Embracing Your Creative Uniqueness by Striving to Never Fit In
Our whole lives we strive to “fit in”. At school, at work, in the neighborhood, in our families, etc.
It’s a societal standard to encourage ourselves to blend in, act and sound like the others, dress like others, think like others.
Well, I want to disrupt that thinking in your mind right now and encourage you to NEVER FIT IT.
It’s ok to Never Fit In!
I know…I may have just completely thrown you off.
What do you mean “Don’t fit in”, Angie?
Let me explain.
I hear a lot of creatives say they don’t fit in. Creatives think in colors while the world thinks in black in white. We scribble with crayons while the world seems to write in fine point pen.
We even express ourselves loudly in our clothes, hairstyles, home decor, etc. Let’s be honest, we can be different. We are up creating when others are sleeping and would rather build a craft shed than a library.
Does this sound like you yet?
The creative process causes us to think outside the box. Matter of fact, we don’t even see the box. Better yet, we have ripped the box up and created art with it. LOL
Listen…Hear me out…What if it didn’t matter if others understood you?
Why it’s overrated to conform
Think about this, one of the first games we learn to play is Duck Duck Goose. In the game, the “leader” of the group goes around the circle and taps on individuals with the word duck, signaling that each of these individuals are the same.
Ultimately, the leader taps one person and says, “GOOSE” and this person is the odd man out and has to get up and chase the leader down.
So from a young child you learn that being a duck, or being in formation as others, is safe. In contrast, to be a goose, or different than others, makes you the odd ball out.
The pressure to fit in, to meet societal expectations, can be overwhelming, tempting us to suppress our unique traits and desires in favor of blending into the crowd.
But who decided what is “normal?”
Who decided that the ducks are better than the goose?
Did you know that you can set your own definition of normal. It is in the act of being true to ourselves that we discover the courage to stand tall, to let our inner light shine, and to inspire others to do the same.
Learning to embrace your uniqueness
Far too often, we feel the pressure to conform, to blend in with the crowd. But it is in embracing our creative uniqueness that we find the courage to stand out, to make a lasting impact, and to live authentically.
Your unique personality is a gift! The world needs your creativity. No one sees life like you. No one approaches decisions like your creative mind.
Believe me friend, your creative self is so needed in society. Our society actually thrives off of the creative nature of invention.
What if Steve Jobs never created the first Apple computer. Where would we be now?
What if Mark Zuckerburg didn’t push to create his social experiment in college? We would have no Facebook/Meta today. How would we keep up with our high school classmates kid’s birthday parties. LOL
I’m sure every inventor was told they were crazy, maybe even weird, but THANK GOD they didn’t stop at what others thought.
Dare to be different. Strive to NEVER FIT IN! By choosing to focus on our own inner light, we free ourselves from the burden of seeking validation from the outside world. Each step towards self-acceptance is a triumph, a declaration that we are enough, exactly as we are.
Finding Confidence in your creativity
The ability to tap into one’s creativity is a superpower not everyone gets to enjoy. What some may deem “different” is actually a gift from God. (I talk a lot about how we are creative because we were made by a creative God, the ultimate Creator. Check that blog out HERE)
Self-acceptance is the foundation upon which true confidence is built. So take some time to get to know what makes you great.
Here are some examples:
- Look at the last 6 months of your life and identify 2 things in your life that you would consider a “WIN”. Think about why it was a win and how you can replicate that thought process over again in life and apply it to other areas of your life
- Ask your friends, family or co-workers around you what they think is your best quality
- Take a personality test to highlight the areas where you shine
The journey of self-discovery is not always easy, but it is a path that leads to a life of purpose, passion, and limitless potential.
My journey to embracing my creative nature
Let me share with you my journey of creativity. I’ve always been that creative kid. While some kids were running around outside, I was making my Barbies dresses. Some teens idolized music stars or actors, I was crazy about Martha Stewart. I even started my first creative business at age 10, where I sold tshirts I made with puffy paint.
Yep, I’m a whole creative vibe.
Unfortunately, growing up kids made me feel like crafting wasn’t cool. So I hid it for many years. No one but my family really knew I could bake, write, sew, craft, etc.
Until one day, I decided that I don’t care what others think. I enjoy crafts!
Ultimately I found out that lots of other people do too. Now that little crafty girl who was scared to tell people she enjoyed cooking out of Julia Child’s cookbook is now running a whole blog and brand dedicated to helping others be creative.
Ultimately, I hope I NEVER FIT IT!
Unleash Your Potential
Let your creativity shine and be the trailblazer the world needs. By choosing to never fit in, you are charting your own course or as Robert Frost might say, “taking the road less traveled.”
Your creativity has the power to inspire, uplift, and make the impossible, possible.
So love your creativity, nurture it, and never stop pushing the boundaries of what you can achieve. Make your mark and let the world see your greatness.
Now, I may be bias, but I think that creative people are some the most interesting, fun, outstanding people I know.
I love going to art fairs and just seeing the mind of a creative express themselves. That’s why I write blogs and sell creativity games and teach seminars on creativity. I want to encourage you to unleash the creative dragon. I want to see your art, watch your play, hear your music, wear your clothes, or decorate my home with your designs.
The world needs you to never fit it.
Inspire Others to Embrace Uniqueness
If you are reading this and saying, I don’t think I’m creative. Well, first, everyone has some type of creativity in them. Second, if creativity is just not of interest to you, then encourage someone else to embrace their uniqueness.
If a child shows promise as an artist, buy them some professional pencils or paint and brushes. If someone you know can sing but has stage fright, invest in them by sending them to a singing coach.
You see where I’m going with this. Whether it’s your creativity or the creativity in someone you know, take the time and energy to grow it!
Those who choose to never fit it are visionaries, innovators, and pioneers. Their stories remind us that the true measure of greatness lies not in how well we fit in, but in how courageously we dare to stand out.
With that spirit of independence, we find the true power to transform our lives and the world around us.
So CHEERS to NEVER FITTING IN!
Until Next Time…Stay Crafty!
Angie
