Hopefully if you are reading this blog, you are either trying to find your creative side or trying to find ways to encourage someone else. Give me the next five minutes that it takes to read this post to convince you that the effort is worth it.

I wanna see the creative lightbulb go off!

You see, in my mind now, I just tasked myself with helping you identify your creative greatness. I’m gonna keep pushing you until the lightbulb goes off.

Being creative is an important part of life, and it’s something that many people strive to attain. But how do you know if you are truly creative? It can be difficult to identify if you have the potential for creativity.

Well, I’m here to answer the question, once and for all, there actually is creativity inside of you…in EVERYONE!

You are creative

A Story of Creative Awakening

During a family gathering I heard such an inspiring story. We were going around the room giving are regular family updates.

You know…She’s pregnant, We’re moving, Johnny got an A+ on his test, etc.

Well, my Aunt told me she would be graduating soon with a degree in art. My attention perked up because I had no idea she did any kind of art.

As she was talking I got so excited that I actually interrupted her update to ask more details.

Listen, I know it sounds a little rude, but I was like a little kid on Christmas. I couldn’t wait anymore. I wanted know everything. LOL
She continued to tell us that she did abstract painting. HOW COOL.

So after her update and she sat down I told her that I didn’t know she was an artist.

And here’s the crazy part. She responded,
“Neither did I.”

She Found Her Inner Artist

As we talked more, She had been taking some classes at a university just for fun. Here initial goal was just to keep her mind active.

It turned out that she had a creative spirit and an artistic mind.

Creativity really wasn’t out of the scope of her abilities. I remember the days when she was really good at decorating homes and making floral arrangements. So I guess it’s not a huge stretch to think of her as a creative.

But it excited me so much to hear and see her describe her newfound passion. With all of her children grown and her grandbaby now running around, she was able to tap into her creativity and find something exciting that was just laying dormant inside of her.

How to know if you are creative

There’s several ways you can figure out if you are creative. You can:

  • Try a craft project. Here’s a list of crafts to try
  • Take a class
  • Try yoga
  • Take a skills assessment test
  • Write in a guided journal
  • Shadow an artist or someone you think is creative
  • Scroll Pinterest for creative ideas
  • Etc.

Any of these activites very well might spark an interest in you. But my ultimate suggestion is to take a book from my Aunt’s story: Just go for it! Try something new. If you don’t like it, try something else. Explore creative things. Welcome creative opportunities. Make time for it in your life

Her story is exactly what I teach people across the country. You are creative! There is creativity in all of us. We just have to learn how to pull it out.

Creativity is in YOU!

A great first step on how to know if you are creative is simply to state that you are. Call it manifestation or realization, it’s just the truth.

I wrote a blog about how I believe God CALLED us to be CREATIVE! Check it out here

You may not be a painter or an artist or a seamstress or even a crafter, but the creativity in you has purpose. Look at other ways that creativity can shine. It doesn’t have to be just crafts or the arts.

For example, You could be the best organizer around or the most creative soccer mom. Yes, you could be the greatest encourager to your kids. You could make the best birthday party decorations anyone has ever seen or be a florist and surprise others with your live arrangements.

The world needs the creative coworker that comes up with icebreakers. Our world needs a creative mom hack or the best way to entertain kids on the beach

This atmosphere needs someone to invent the next technology.  Your brain could be holding the latest kitchen gadget or a IT code. Whatever it is, it’s worth exploring and the world is waiting to see what you come up with.

Identify your creativity, then grow it

Creativity is a skill that can be learned and honed with practice. If you want to know if you are creative, the best way is to explore and try different activities. You may find that some activities come naturally to you, while others require more effort.

You will even find there are many benefits to growing your creativity. I wrote a blog about “9 ways crafting can change your life.” Check it out. You’ll find that the benefits outway the effort it takes to grow your creativity.

Finally, don’t take your exploration of creativity too seriously – it should be a fun and rewarding experience! With a bit of probing and openness to trying new things, you can discover your inner artist and make your mark in this world!

I can’t wait to see and hear about it!

Until Next Time, Stay Crafty!
