I’ve gone to several weddings where they gave a complimentary fan to guests.

I even considered making paper hand fans for the moms and dads in my nephew’s baseball team. God bless them for sitting through hours and hours of games in the blazing heat.

Paper Fans are Convienent

You can make a good paper fan in less than 10 minutes. Then you can fold it up, drop it in your purse and you’re out the door. Quick, easy and convienent!

What type of paper to use for a DIY fan

To make a good paper fan, you want to use good quality paper. For example, 24lb and higher scrapbook paper or 65lb Card Stock.

All paper will work, even basic copy paper, but your diy fan will last longer with quality paper.

Here’s 3 easy way how to make a good paper fan:

#1 – The Classic

This is a basic way to a fan. You can add other things from here, but if you get this basic method down, you will have a good paper fan.

Supplies:

  • 2 pieces of 8.5 x 11 Scrapbook Paper (any color or print)
  • Glue (I use glue tape and hot glue, but you can use any kind of glue you like)
  • Popsicle Sticks (I like the ones that curve for holding)
  • Ribbon or Twine
  • Scissors

#2 – Double Layer Folding Fan

This example uses 2 different colors of paper and layers them on top of each other, giving your hand fan a fancy edge.

This fan uses Vellum paper, which is a thick see through parchment type paper. It’s very stiff, but see through. Works great with fans, but can tear easily during construction. So take your time.

#3 – Japanese Folding Fan

This example is a bit more intricate, but gives a whole other hand fan look. It gives me “church lady” vibes, or Southern belle persona. You can make a Japanese Folding Fan with paper or fabric.

Get Creative with your Fans

Now that you know how to make a good paper fan, you can make it your own. Here’s a few ideas:

  • Let the kids doodle on the paper before you fold it. It will be their own custom “pattern”
  • Paint the sticks
  • Cover the sticks in ribbon or diamond mesh for an elegant touch
  • And names to the fan
  • Trim paper in washi tape
  • Use stiff fabric instead
  • And so many more options.

Stay Cool and Be Cute

If you are out in the heat, stay cool, and be cute with you fan. Enjoy the breeze!

Until Next Time…Stay Crafty!
