How to make a DIY boho chalkboard to increase communication in your home

A Win is a Win

Are you tired of missing important appointments or struggling to manage the constant flow of information within your household? I know I do. That’s why I came up with this DIY Boho Chalkboard, a fun and cute way to increase communication in your home.

Whether it’s jotting down grocery lists, leaving sweet messages or doodles for your loved ones, or keeping track of upcoming events, this DIY Boho Chalkboard is worth the time to make. It’s a WIN.

Crafting plus Functionality

Crafting is not only a creative outlet but also an opportunity to create functional pieces that can enhance our everyday lives. The DIY Boho Chalkboard is the perfect example of a craft you can actually use. With this crafty project, you can create a stylish chalkboard that not only adds a touch of boho charm to your home but also serves as a practical tool for managing all your moving pieces.

Why Boho Design?

Boho, which is short for Bohemian, has become popular again in design. It’s the more mature and polished version of hippie decor. It includes natural materials, colors of nature like whites, browns, blacks, blues and greens. That’s why adding a black chalkboard with brown jute rope is a perfect boho combo.

Boho design is also popular because of its versatility. It can be dressed up or down depending on personal preferences and your overall theme of your room. Whether you prefer a minimalist approach or want to incorporate vibrant patterns and colors, boho design allows for endless customization options.

I redid my craft basement during the covid shut down and choose to go with a boho chic feel. You can see my Boho Mirror project HERE. The entire room is all white with an accent black wall and gold accents to bring in my glam “Diva” vibe. So this peace is a great addition to this boho space.

Let’s begin

Supplies Needed:

  • Dollar Tree Pizza Pan
  • Black Vinyl (I used the chalkboard type from Cricut but any will do, including the vinvl at the Dollar tree)
  • Jute Rope (Here’s what I bought from Amazon)
  • Hot Glue
  • Chalk
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • 3M hook or something to hang it with

I get lots of my supplies from the Dollar Tree. Crafting can be expensive, so save when you can. You could get everything for this project from the Dollar Tree and the project would cost less than $15.

Starting your DIY Boho Chalkboard

Start with a blank pizza pan. Lay your black vinyl down on top of the pizza pan to completely cover it, without taking the backing off just yet. Next you are going to trace on the black vinyl the inside rim shape of the pizza pan. This will help you make a template for your chalkboard. Trace around the entire pizza pan and then cut that circle out.

Starting a DIY chalkboard

Once you have your circle, peel the backing on the vinyl and slowly place it on the front of the pizza pan, starting on one corner and smoothing as you go.

Adding the Rope

Now it’s time to add the rope, which is the Boho element. We are going to cover the entire pizza pan outer edge.

You will start by placing some hot glue on the pan where you want to start of your rope then add hot glue in a circle all around the pan, followed by the rope. Start at the edge of your black vinyl and work your way to the edge of the pan.

Add Decorative Flare

At this point, you really could be finished with your DIY Boho Chalkboard, but since you are making something custom, why not add some decorative flare?

Feel free to follow along with the design below, or get creative and come up with your own pattern.

The next step is to use the jute rope to make loops around the board. I measured loops about 3 inches wide. Go ahead and cut about all your loops. It will take 12-15 loops depending the size of pan you have.

To attach them, flip over the pan and start by hot gluing the edge of the first loop on the back in the middle, then measure 3 inches over and hot glue the next loop. Repeat until you have covered the entire board. (see the TikTok video below for a video tutorial)

Finally to add an additional bit of flare, I did a second row of loops. Same length, but I glued the loops in the middle of the first row, giving it a scalloped look.

Finishing your Chalkboard

To finish up this project, just add 1 row of jute rope on top of all the loops on the back of the board. This will help keep the loops in place and help cover up any messy hot glue.

To secure it to the wall add a 3M Velcro strip or your favorite type of hook.

Communicate in Style
