Simple DIY Mirror Re-Design- From Drab to Fab

DIY Mirror Frame with a Boho Feel

I refreshed my bathroom with a DIY Boho Mirror Frame project.

Do you have a space in your home that you are just tired of looking at?  I can’t be the only one.  Rooms that need a refresh?

These type of rooms have had the same type of design for years and that design esthetic was from YEARS ago too.  Well that was my basement.  A nice space, but a boring space.  It was always an after thought when I was decorating my home.

Now here I was 4.5 years later with just blah.  And it’s my craft room too.  Now how did that happen?

So after spending hours and hours in my basement during the Covid-19 quarantine, I decided it’s time to re-design my basement. T

Decorating is Expensive…Or is it?

Re-Decorating a space can be fun.  You start adding all kinds of things to your Amazon cart and planning trips to Home Goods and Bed, Bath and Beyond, then you realize it can become very expensive.  This is where DIY skills come in handy. All you need is a little time and effort.

I sat down and made a plan of all the things I wanted to do in the basement.  Then I started researching how much everything was going to cost and I almost passed out.

It costs HOW MUCH? I wasn’t even doing anything structurally, just cosmetic and the price tag was in the thousands.  So I decided to DIY several projects including re-designing this basic white mirror below.

My suggestion is to find at least a few projects that you can DIY on your own (with helpful blogs like purplecraftdiva.com and youtube). The savings will be significant in your overall budget.

Basic white mirror

(If you don’t have an old mirror, here’s a good basic mirror to start with. The project will still be very cost effective and a fraction of the $499 mirror from Pottery Barn)

Turning your home from Drab to Fab with DIY

You can take existing pieces in your home and spice them up by repurposing them.  I had a basic builder grade white mirror in my basement bathroom.  Initially I decided I was going to buy a brand new fancy mirror, but have you checked the prices of mirrors lately?  Ridiculous!

I just couldn’t justify throwing a perfectly good mirror out just because it was drab.  I decided to find a mirror that I liked that I could redesign the mirror frame for cheaper.  It’s called upcycling.

Pottery Barn Mirror $499

My basement has a boho modern theme so I found this cute Jute Rope Mirror from Pottery Barn for $499.  Listen, this mirror might be worth $499, but I’m not paying it.   I mean, I barely use this bathroom. LOL.

Jute

Instead, I found this thick Jute Twine on Amazon and bought 2 to turn my old mirror into a DIY boho mirror frame. It was a fun project and the total cost was less than $25.

DIY Boho Mirror Frame

Time needed: 2 hours

Here’s how I made my $25 Boho Modern Mirror

  1. Clean the old mirror frame to remove any dust and dirt.

  2. Start in any inside corner of the mirror and start hot gluing your Jute Rope to the corner.

I found that High Temp glue worked batter to give me more time to position the rope where I wanted it to go.

  3. Glue around…and around…and around!

Glue around the entire mirror until you have covered the entire surface. I ran out of rope about 3/4 way through and had to order another bolt. So buy 2 from the beginning. Stock up on plenty of glue sticks because it’s gonna take A LOT!

  4. Take your scissors and trim any fly away strands and cut away any hot glue that may be showing.

  5. That’s it. You’re done. Clean the mirror off with your favorite glass cleaner and hang your new mirror.

Make your DIY Mirror your own

You can do this same process with a variety of materials. Make it your own by trying feathers, marbles, fabric, flat beads, peel & stick tile, etc. The possibilities are endless.

Re-decorating doesn’t have to be expensive. There’s always a creative option to save you time and money (If you’ve like to learn more about my passion for creativity, Click Here).

This is awesome! Thank you for sharing. I picked up a mirror on the side of the road (great find) and really wanna go with a polynesian/ beachy theme for my house. I’m wondering how a row of marbles would look between the jute. My mirror is pretty beveled… anyways rambling now. Thanks for the inspo!

This would be perfect for the beach theme you mentioned. I think marbles would look better on the outside rim of the frame. Depending on what the frame looks like, you may have color peeking through that you don’t want. Give it a try. I’d love to see your finished piece as well.
