How To Make a Pillow with Lumbar Support

Make a Pillow

Making pillows is a great craft for beginners and experts alike.  There’s not tons of time involved and only requires quick, simple seams to finish the project.  Most of all, DIY Pillows are a great way to express your personality and add your own flair to your home decor.

Sewing was one of the first crafts I learned and the very first thing they taught us to do is make a pillow.  My mom made my siblings and I take extracurricular classes at the nearby community center EVERY SUMMER!  Whether you wanted to or not, you were going to a class.  Get out there.  Learn something.  Be great! So over the course of many summers, I learned how to paint, sew, bake, and so much more.  Today, I’m grateful to know how to sew and I guess I should apologize to my Mom for complaining all those years.  Listen, I’m no seamstress, but I do think sewing is one of those basic life skills everyone needs to learn.

Custom Pillows Serve Many Purposes

When making pillows, you can make so many types.  For example, you can make pillowcases for your bed, throw pillows for your couch, even support pillows like lumbar pillows for your back and knee cushions for alignment.  You can make your pillows small or big, cushy or stiff, with bright colors or neutrals…whatever your heart desires. That’s the beauty of DIY.

Lumbar Support is Important

I created this lumbar support pillow DIY project because I needed a lumbar pillow myself. I work long hours at a computer desk or at my craft table (cranking out these little projects for my craft tribe.  You can thank me later LOL) and I noticed I had terrible posture sitting in my chairs.  It’s because I hated how it felt to sit straight back in the chair.  Recently, I even purchased a chair with “lumbar support” but still had terrible lower back pain.  Lumbar support pillows sit right in the lower curve of your back to support you while sitting.  Making your own lumbar support pillow allows you to customize it to the size and thickness you actually need.  Win-Win for you and I.

Make a Pillow with Style

These days, you can find inspiration and materials anywhere.  You can add trim and embellishments, create your own patterns with paint, use unconventional materials such as rugs and t-shirts, personalize with sublimation or iron-on vinyl.  The possibilities really are endless.  I consider myself pretty creative and I am regularly see DIY projects that make me say WOW.  Creativity is so cool (If you wanna read more about my passion for creativity, Click Here).

DIY Bow Pillow

Diy bow pillow

If you are unsure of what to create, I have a great project for you, a DIY bow pillow.  This tutorial will walk you through how to make this cutesy little pillow that brings added comfort and support.   And I had to make a pillow that was cute and frilly with a bow…I mean I do call myself a “Diva” for a reason. LOL

Lumbar Support Pillow Supplies:

Let’s get into it.  Here is a list of supplies you will need to complete this project:

  • 1/2 yard of fabric or some type of material that can be sewn
  • Coordinating spool of thread
  • Pillow filling material or pre-made pillow insert
  • A sewing machine
  • A iron
  • Scissors

Assuming you already have the last three items, the total cost for this pillow would be $8-$15.  To cut cost and waste, I reused the filling from an old pillow that no longer matched my decor.  Upcycle for the win!

Step by Step Video Tutorial

Watch the video below to walk you through this DIY Bow Pillow project step by step.  I made my pillow 16″ by 9″ because that’s what fit best in my chair, but feel free to make your pillows any size.

I just love my DIY Bow Pillow and I hope you love yours too.  Feel free to post a picture of your pillow below.  I’d love to see what colors and patterns you chose.

Until next time, Stay Crafty!
